Cultural Awareness and Expression (CAE) is an essential component of European identity, contributing to unity, diversity, and social cohesion. Given the evolving global socio-political landscape, the need to foster CAE has become more pressing than ever. The European Union (EU) has long recognized culture as a vital aspect of its policies, with initiatives aimed at empowering cultural and creative sectors, enhancing participation, and leveraging culture for social and economic benefits. The importance of CAE has been underscored by recent global events such as cultural conflicts, economic crises, political conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic, among others.
Why Cultural Awareness and Expression (CAE) matter?
Europe is a tapestry of languages, traditions, and histories. However, globalisation and rigid cultural identities have posed challenges to the preservation and evolution of heritage. CAE serves as a bridge to mutual understanding, allowing people to engage with different cultural narratives while fostering a sense of belonging.
Furthermore, CAE is a crucial tool for social inclusion. It provides platforms for multicultural communities to express their identities, contributing to the EU’s vision of a more equitable society. As outlined in the EU Youth Strategy, CAE empowers young people, encouraging them to participate in democracy and societal progress while enhancing their resilience and creative potential.
How PULSE-ART strengthens CAE?
The PULSE-ART project embraces the concept of “Cultural and Creative Industries” (CCIs) recognizing that cultural institutions should actively engage with communities and contribute to social progress. By fostering partnerships between CCIs, educators, and policymakers, the project ensures that culture remains a central pillar of European identity and development.
By integrating arts and education, PULSE-ART aims to create inclusive spaces where cultural awareness thrives, and individuals—especially young citizens—develop a deeper appreciation of Europe’s diverse heritage. The project aligns closely with the EU’s cultural policy framework, reinforcing values of respect, collaboration, and creative expression across multiple communities.
The project focuses on several key areas:
- Empowering educators: By enhancing the capacity of educators, PULSE-ART equips them with tools and methodologies that incorporate arts into learning.
- Building collaborative hubs: Creating spaces where CCIs share methods and experiences, fostering innovation and cultural appreciation.
- Generating empirical evidence: Conducting different case studies in Europe, including one international in Morocco, to assess the impact of arts-based education on CAE.
- Influencing policy: Developing national action plans and policy briefs to ensure long-term integration of arts in education.
